Market Watch: The Week Ahead

Sunday, September 20, 2026

Hello investors!

The Fed hiked Wednesday as expected (to 3.75%-4.00%), stocks rallied on the news, and now attention shifts from the Fed to the White House. Trump hosts Xi Jinping Thursday in what could be the most consequential bilateral meeting of the year. Costco and General Mills report, plus PMI data Wednesday gives the first read on September economic momentum. Here's what matters:

Thursday Trump-Xi Summit: Markets' Wild Card

Thursday – Trump and Xi meet at the White House. Topics: tariffs, trade deals, Iran war, Taiwan, AI safety.

This is the week's defining event. The two leaders last met in Beijing in May, where they agreed to pause trade war escalation. That détente has held – but barely, with some tariffs still in effect.

Bull scenario: Progress on tariff reduction, trade deal framework announced, AI safety accord. Markets rally broadly, especially China-exposed tech (AAPL, NVDA, TSLA).

Base case: Cordial meeting, no major announcements, status quo maintained. Markets shrug.

Bear scenario: Breakdown over Taiwan or Iran war positioning. Risk-off immediately.

Watch for any joint statement language. Specific tariff percentages mentioned = market-moving. Vague diplomatic language = nothing to see.

Sectors most sensitive: Semiconductors (export controls), consumer tech (Apple China), EVs (Li Auto, NIO, XPeng), and energy (Iran war discussed).

Costco Thursday: Membership Economy Health Check

Thursday after close – Costco reports Q4 fiscal 2026.

Costco is the cleanest read on value-seeking consumer behavior. With inflation still running hot post-rate hike, consumers trading down to warehouse clubs is a logical response.

Watch for:

  • Comparable sales growth (recent trend has been strong)
  • Membership renewal rates (need to stay above 89%)
  • Executive membership penetration
  • Any tariff cost commentary following Trump-Xi talks

If Costco sounds confident on membership growth and traffic, consumer resilience is intact. Costco reports the same evening as the Trump-Xi meeting concludes – watch for any trade deal commentary affecting their import cost structure.

General Mills Wednesday: Food Inflation Pass-Through

Wednesday before open – General Mills reports Q1 fiscal 2027.

As the Fed just raised rates and inflation stays above target, the question for food companies is how much pricing power remains. General Mills (Cheerios, Häagen-Dazs, Betty Crocker) has been raising prices for two years.

Watch for:

  • Volume trends (are consumers buying less at higher prices?)
  • Private label competition
  • Gross margin sustainability
  • Guidance tone for fiscal 2027

Wednesday PMIs: Post-Hike Economic Pulse

Wednesday – September PMI flash readings:

  • Manufacturing: 53.6 expected (down from 54.1)
  • Services: 56.0 expected (down slightly from August)

Both comfortably above 50, suggesting expansion continues despite the rate hike environment. If either slips toward 50, it validates concerns that monetary tightening is biting.

This is the first economic read after Wednesday's rate hike. Markets will scrutinize it for evidence of growth slowdown.

AutoZone Tuesday: Auto Parts in a High-Rate World

Tuesday – AutoZone reports Q4 fiscal 2026.

High interest rates keep consumers in their existing cars longer (can't afford new car loans at 7%+ rates). That's structurally bullish for auto parts retailers. But consumer spending pressure could limit discretionary maintenance spending.

Watch for same-store sales growth and commercial segment trends.

Bottom Line

The Fed hike is done. Now markets must process what a 3.75%-4.00% rate world means for growth. The first test comes Wednesday with PMIs – do they show the economy absorbing the hike, or cracking under it?

But the Trump-Xi summit Thursday is the genuine wild card. A breakthrough on tariffs could send markets surging. A breakdown over Taiwan could reverse the post-hike rally instantly.

Don't be caught flat-footed Thursday morning. Trade war headlines can move markets 2% in minutes. Keep some dry powder for opportunities that the summit creates.

What's your Trump-Xi prediction – breakthrough, status quo, or breakdown? And does Costco confirm the consumer is still spending? Hit reply with your thoughts.

Until then, stay sharp and happy investing!

P.S. – Costco reports Thursday evening, the same day as the Trump-Xi summit. If the meeting produces tariff relief, Costco's import cost structure improves immediately. Two catalysts in one afternoon.
